The Canine Bowen Technique (CBT)
Canine Bowen Therapy involves a series of gentle, non-invasive connective tissue manipulations( ‘light-touch’ therapy ) applied to key points on the animal’s body.  Like the Bowen Technique for people, it is a hands-on technique that promotes healing, pain-relief and body/energy rebalancing, an effective hands-on technique that addresses the whole Central Nervous System.

CBT is based on the principles of a human modality - the Bowen Technique - which originated in Australia and was brought to the UK in 1993. Although working mainly on humans, Tom Bowen, after whom the therapy is named, also occasionally treated horses and dogs, and therapists worldwide have been amazed at the response that this gentle therapy can have on animals.

One of the major principles of the Bowen Technique - indeed any complementary therapy, human or animal - is that it is holistic. In other words, it “treats the body as a whole, without referral to named disease”. So CBT therapists do not treat the veterinary-diagnosed disease or condition per se, but treat the dog, as they see it, on the day.

For example, although a dog may be brought with a condition such as rear-leg lameness, a CBT therapist may well treat other parts of the body as well, including the back, neck, and front-legs, in order to address other possible problem areas caused as a result of the dog compensating for the presenting condition. In this case the dog may well have tried to shift its weight forward in order to relieve the pain in the rear-legs, but this, in turn, will affect the carriage of the head and neck, and require the front-legs to carry more load. By addressing these other areas, we are maximising the dog’s attempts to return its body to proper balance. addressing postural and behavioural problems. The Technique is applied placing fingers, thumbs and palms of the hand to precise points of the dog, stimulating and improving blood circulation, lymphatic drainage, digestion, releasing emotional stress, tension and congestion within the animal.   The therapist will apply light rolling movements over the dogs tissues ( ligaments, muscles, tendons, fascia and skin )

The Bowen Technique begins to take effect from the very first move. Treatment must be delivered calmly and with care to allow the dog to accept the therapist and the therapy.

The Bowen Technique works by the moves causing  vibration within the muscle which is detected by the neurological system "nerve endings".

These nerve endings - of which there are millions - then transmit there findings to the brain and it is the brains job to make sense of it all.    The brain is then "triggered" into "unravelling" abnormalities it has detected which is the key to the Bowen Technique.   The "unravelling" is done layer by layer and each individual brain and body must work at their own pace.

Most of the Bowen body work is concentrated on connective tissue known as fascia. Unlike other structures, which have beginning and end points, fascia is a continuous membrane-like plastic wrap that covers every organ, blood vessel, nerve, muscle and bone throughout the whole body.  In prime condition, fascia is loose, moist, mobile and elastic, facilitating movement between the parts of the body and the flow of bodily fluids throughout the body.

Through a series of gentle cross-fibre moves, Bowen treatment releases “gluing” in the fascia, allowing the tissue to become more moveable.  As the fascia improves through better hydration, the body is able to provide a better supply of nutrients to the cells and remove waste.   There will then be less restriction on muscles, tendons and ligaments and the vascular, lymphatic and nervous systems will be able to function more effectively.

Bowen therapy can benefit dogs of all sizes and ages and can help them live a more active and happy life.   It is of particular benefit during periods of illness, as an aid to recovery from injury or surgery or, like many of us, when suffering the effects of old age and arthritis begins to slow them down.

Canine Bowen Technique is not a substitute for proper veterinary care, and should be used in conjunction with orthodox veterinary treatment. It is only available on veterinary referral.Canine Bowen therapists do not diagnose any specific problem. Under no circumstances will Canine Bowen therapists prescribe medication or alter any medication already prescribed for the dog.

Canine Conditions and Responses
Canine Bowen therapy has been used on dogs for conditions ranging from dogs with stiff joints, allergic skin, eye and ear conditions, noise intolerance, ligament damage, muscle tension and digestive disorders to name just a few. All these conditions are symptoms of other causes that only the dog and Canine Bowen Therapy know of.

Bellow is a list of conditions that can affect your dog. This is not a list of conditions that can be cured using CBT, it is a list of conditions affecting dogs that can be safely treated using CBT.
There are no contra indications to using Bowen for your dog. Every animal will benefit in someway from Bowen Therapy.
