Tui Na is a form of Chinese medical massage and it is used to enhance the effects of acupuncture and herbal medicine. It has been in use for over 2000 years. In Chinese, 'Tui' means 'push' and 'Na' means 'grasp'.

According to Chinese theories, Tui Na stimulates the flow of energy and blood to aid healing by use of massage techniques along the energy meridians and at acupuncture points. Tui Na techniques include massage of muscles and soft tissues, manipulation of joints and muscles and acupressure at acupuncture points.

Tui Na is very similar to western massage, which is well known to benefit circulation and lymphatic flow and have a very relaxing effect. Unlike western massage, however, specific effects are produced via stimulation of acupuncture points and meridians and a specific area of body or problem is treated.

Tui Na is most commonly used for musculoskeletal problems. Internal medical conditions, such as digestive, reproductive or respiratory disorders may also benefit from Tui Na since according to Chinese medical laws, stimulation of acupuncture points not only benefits the circulation but also balances internal organs. Tui Na is not used for infectious conditions or where there is disease of the blood vessels and obviously not where there are fractures or open wounds/lesions.

Tui Na therapy is very well tolerated by all species and most patients find it very relaxing. Since no needles are used even needle-shy or fearful patients can benefit. It is suitable for all animals, including the very young and elderly.

A short Tui Na massage will often be given at the start and end of an acupuncture session. This will relax and calm and stimulate the circulation as well as treat your animal's condition. You may be given simple massage exercises to do at home between acupuncture sessions to supplement the effects.
