Manage Fear and Stress Related Signs in Dogs ......Naturally

Resulting from veterinary research, D.A.P. can help your dog in a number of stressful situations
D.A.P. mimics the properties of the natural appeasing phromones of the bitch.  By replicating this signal of well-being
D.A.P. helps to alleviate fear and stress related signs in the puppy and the adult dog.

Signs of stress in dogs
Barking, house soiling or destructive behaviour may all be signs of stress.  They often appear when the animal is left alone in the house or is separated from you in another room.

Your dog may be over-attached to you if:dapplugin

1.  When you are away, it shows signs of distress by

      - barking
     - house soiling
     - destructive behaviour

2.  When you come back, it shows excessive greeting behaviour.

3.  All its activities appear to be focused around you.

The origin of stress
There is a strong bond between the puppy and its mother, which gives it confidence and reassurance.

When you get the puppy, you should provide protection, and become the new attatchment link.  But as the dog matures some degree of separation must occur.  If this is not happening, the dog may become over-attached to you.  This can lead to stress with dogs showing the signs described above.

Under certain circumstances, the problem may start at any time in the dog's life.

The Puppy
D.A.P. helps prevent fear and stress related signs in puppies, such as restlessness and vocalisation (whining/crying).

D.A.P. helps establish the puppy in a new environment.  e.g. arrival in the new home and coping with strangers.

The Adult
D.A.P. helps stop fear and stress related signs in adult dogs, such as destruction, vocalisation, house soiling and excessive licking.

D.A.P. comforts the dog in stressful environments (visitors, strangers, visits to the vet, novel and unpredictable situations).

Dog Appeasing Pheromone
In mammals, all lactating females release substances called 'appeasing' pheromones, the function of which is to reassure the offspring.  Canine 'appeasing' pheromones are secreted by the bitch 3 to 5 days after the puppies birth.  The substance is produced by the sebaceous glands in the inter-mammary cleft.

This enhances attatchment between the puppy and its mother and provides reassurance and comfort.

As the puppy explores its environment it encounters new stimuli which set off emotional reactions.  The puppy tends to react by looking for contact with its mother.  The appeasing pheromone acts by stabilising the emotional state of the puppy.

Research has shown that the reassuring properties of canine appeasing phromone persist even into adulthood.  They appear to modulate both emotional state and social interaction throughout the dog's life.

To Overcome the Fear of Fireworks

1.  Two weeks before the event

Plug in a D.A.P. diffuser in the room the dog uses to rest and relax.
Do not swith the plug on and off.

2.  On the Day of the Event

a.  Feed your dog a good meal which is rich in carbohydrate with added vitamin B6 mid to late afternoon so he has a full stomach over the evening (don't try this if your dog is prone to diarrhoea when it is scared or at other times).  If necessary dont feed him at any other time in the day which will ensure a good appetite.

b.  Move your dog to a blackened out room at sundown with some toys and preferably things for you to do as well, so he is not abandoned in the room.  Blackening out the room removes the potential for additional problems from flashing lights.

c.  Put some music on, preferably something with a lot of constant drumbeats.  It doesn't have to be loud as  long as there is a constant distracting beat to the music.

d.  Ignore the noises yourself and try and engage your pet in some form of active game.

e.  Don't punish your dog when he is scared, it only confirms that there was something to be afraid of.

f.  Don't fuss or try to reassure your dog whn he is scared, as this rewards the behaviour.

g.  Ignore any fearful behaviour that occurs for no reason.

h.  Make sure your dog is kept in a safe a place and secure environment at all times so that it doesn't bolt and escape if a sudden noise occurs.

i.  D.A.P. Spray can be applied to a bandana or onto the dogs bedding on the night of the event for additional reassurance in combination with the diffuser.  Allow 15 minutes for alcohol to evaporate before letting the dog into the area.

j.  If you know of a dog that is not scared by the noises and gets on with your own dog then keeping the two together during the evenings may help.  Playing with the non-fearful dog if your own dog becomes scared may help to encourage the fearful dog that all is not so bad after all.

After the Event
Leave the D.A.P. diffuser plugged in for one week.

If it is likely that similar events will happen several times in the same period, maintain a D.A.P. difuser during the whole period.

Don't ignore the problem just because it happens only once or twice a year.  Instigate a desensitisation programme witha qualified behaviourist once the season is over and you have control over the environment again.

To Stay Alone

Leaving and returning
Try to make these events insignificant and thus decrease the amount of stress to your dog.

a.  30 minutes before leaving try not to show any interest in the dog.

b.  Leave naturally, without talking to the dog or making prolonged goodbyes.

c.  When you return, ignore the dog till it calms down.  Fuss the dog only when it has calmed down.

d.  Try to be the one who initiates contact such as play, petting or treats.  Do not allow the dog to dictate when it interacts with you.

Generally

1.  Give the dog independence.

2.  Force the dog to spend time in a different room than you-the use of door gates can help in difficult cases.

3.  Teach the dog to be stroked and handled by other individuals.

4.  Remember, if your dog has misbehaved during your absence, do not punish it, it won't understand.

Natural Spray

dapspray

D.A.P.® (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) - to help dogs overcome fears and stress and ease the fear of travel.

Dogs susceptible to car sickness may have a persistent, underlying fear of travelling. This can be due to the fear of leaving a secure and familiar environment (we should remember the dog cannot know if it will ever return), a previous bad experience or a fear of noise. The application of D.A.P. Spray to the area within the car where your dog travels should reduce its apprehension and bring about an improvement.
