A Blood Bank for
dogs, the first of its kind, has been set up in a bid to help vets throughout
the uk save the lives of our dogs. The blood bank will give veterinary
professionals immediate access to blood products allowing lifesaving blood
transfusions. The
PBBuk launched the service at Crufts last year. One single donation
can help up to four dogs if they need a blood transfusion. PBBuk is
a non-for-profit charity supported by VetsNow, provider of emergency and
critical veterinary care.
The blood bank relies entirely on volunteer donors to provide blood donations
which can then save the lives of critically ill pets. Pet Blood Bank UK holds clinics to collect
blood every weekend all around Loughborough and up to June 2008 has so far
banked 1200 donations from 500 donors. The blood is collected then taken
back to the charities state of the art unit in Loughborough where it is processed
into packed red blood cells and fresh plasma, for veterinary professionals
to use in providing life saving blood transfusions. These vital blood products are
then supplied to veterinary practices across the UK. This means that
if your dog needs to benefit from a transfusion during surgery or to treat
major traumas and disease, vets will have blood products on hand when they
need it most.
Any healthy dog weighing more than 25kg and between the ages of one and
eight years old, can donate as long as the dog has never been abroad or recieved
a blood transfusion. For more details visit www.petbloodbankuk.org
