Red itchy ears are a frequent problem in dogs.  The main causes are allergies, ear mites, foreign bodies and tumours.  Of these, allergies to substances in the environment, including dist mites, pollen, grass and food are the most common source of irritation.  the symptoms of ear disease are often similar, even if the causes differ.  Inflammation leads the dog to shake its head or scratch and wax, bacteria and yeasts often build up, sometimes leading to a cheesy smell.  One or both ears can be affected.

In the spring and summer, foreign bodies such as grass often cause frantic head shaking and pain.  Cleaning with ear cleaner and cottonwool can reduce wax, but allergies and mites need specific treatment.  it is best to get your vet to have a look, as a thorough examination and medication are often needed.
