Treating
Gastroenteritis Most
cases of gastropenteritis, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea, will
clear up in two days. This is because the most common cause of
the problem is overloading the gut either with too much food or with
material that causes gut irritiation, for example, eating a rotten
rabbit or gorging on horse droppings.
Unfortunately, the first signs of potentially fata gastroenteric
disease, such as parvovirus, can be similar to gut overload. Dogs
may have a painful abdomen, vomit, pass loose faeces, sometimes wioth
blood and can become depressed.
If you know that it is food overload, stare the dog for 24 hours and
then feed it small meals of chicken and rice or pasta and potato for a
few days. If the dog vomits re[peatedly or is unwilling to move,
take it to the vet, as fluid loss and gut toxins can cause severe
illness.
