Kane came to us in November 2001 at aged 15 months. I had been trying
to help his owners find him a new home because they were no longer able to
keep him. They had purchased Kane at 9 weeks old, but a few weeks after
they took him home his owner suffered a brain haemorrhage. With his
owner being in hospital for a year with his wife attending his bedside on
a daily basis Kane was left at home with friends and family feeding
and walking him. Kane had received little or no training but had come to
love people due to the changing faces that assumed the daily task of his food
and exercise. When the owner returned from hospital there was concern
this very boisterous GSD may cause him another bleed should he jump or knock
him, or catch him off guard. I tried to help the owners find employment
for Kane with 2 police forces but after only 2 weeks with both the Met Police
and South Yorkshire Police Kane was returned to them for failing the bite
aspect of police training. Having said their goodbyes twice to Kane
only for him to return had caused the couple a lot of distress, and it was
at this point I decided that this loveable character could find a home
here.
A gentle character that idolises my four year old granddaughter. He
played a great part in saving her life when she fell into my garden pond
when she was only 2 years old. The bond that struck up between
the two of them was heart warming to see and I have never been more grateful
for being given the opportunity to share my life with him. He can be
quite assertive at times when he thinks one of the other dogs is not behaving
correctly and has to be reminded from time to time that we decide who is right
or wrong.
Just his appearance is enough to deter any would be intruder, but from
his police reports the chances of anyone being bitten would be very slim.
It is a dog that found a new lease of life when Bongo came on the scene
because he had found a playmate that was willing to tolerate the rougher
play that he enjoys.
