Ticks and Their Diseases
Harvey Caruthers
In The UK and
Europe ticks spread Lyme Disease, Babesiosis and Ehrlichiosis among other
diseases. The last two infections occur widely in mainland Europe,
but less frequently here, so dogs that travel abroad are at greater risk.
Ehrlichiosis causes fever, loss of appetite, stiffness and prolonged bleeding.
Babesiosis, which can be fatal, causes fever, anaemia, weakness and
dark urine. In the UK, only 13 cases of Babesiosis were confirmed
between 2003 and 2006. Symptons of Lyme Disease in dogs include lameness
and fever. The illness affects 400 people in the UK every year.
Once a tick is attached it takes two dayus before the infection is passed
on, so check each day for ticks from March to October. Tick repellant
products may prevent the disease spreading but must be applied every few
weeks and may not work on those already attached.
