E.R.D. HealthScreen Urine Tests

talalogoa

The kidneys filter a dog's entire blood volume every 30 minutes. As a result, the kidneys are continually exposed to a myriad of potentially damaging substances, infectious agents, or conditions (e.g., antigen-antibody complexes, toxins, bacteria, hypertension). Various disease processes may damage nephrons, resulting in leakage of albumin into the urine. Conventional urine tests (urine specific gravity, BUN, creatinine) don't detect kidney damage until - 75% of kidney function is lost.

Examples of these disease processes include the following:

Inflammatory Diseases
Dental Disease, Pyoderma, Immune-mediated Diseases, Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Infectious Diseases
Heartworm, Ehrlichiosis, Lyme
Metabolic Diseases
 Diabetes Mellitus, Hyperadrenocorticism, Hypertension
Neoplasia

Heska have introduced a new test for early detection of canine kidney damage.  The E.R.D.-in house Screen Test enables veterinarians to obtain results within five minutes. The persistent presence of albumin in the urine is a marker of kidney damage and, in the absence of other clinical abnormalities, is believed to identify dogs in the early stages of renal disease. Heska's E.R.D.-Screen Test is significantly more sensitive and specific than conventional urine dipsticks, enabling earlier detection and treatment of kidney damage. The E.R.D.-Screen Test was developed by Heska in collaboration with Diagnostic Chemicals, Ltd. of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Heska recommends that all dogs three years-of-age or older be tested as part of their annual wellness exam. Regular testing should also be considered for high-risk breeds, genetically predisposed dogs and dogs with a history of kidney problems or other chronic illness.

Heska's Chairman and CEO, Robert Grieve, says:

"Renal disease is the second leading cause of death in dogs and often goes undetected until it is too late. It is estimated that 70 to 80% of kidney function is already destroyed before veterinarians can detect renal disease using existing tests. Early detection is key to the introduction of dietary or therapeutic regimens that could significantly slow the progression of the disease and add quality years to a dog's life. This test will provide veterinarians with a rapid and inexpensive tool to identify dogs in the earliest stages of the disease."

Grieve added:

"The E.R.D.-Screen Test is one of several planned product introductions that support our ongoing commitment to developing novel products that serve the needs of companion animal veterinarians in the growing companion animal health market."

The E.R.D.-HealthScreen® Urine Tests detect small amounts of albumin in the urine ("microalbuminuria"). Microalbumin (MA) has been clinically defined as levels of albumin in the urine grater than normal (1mg/dL) and less than overt protenuria (30mg/dL) at a standardised specific gravity of 1.010.

Low levels of albumin in the urine are referred to as “microalbuminuria” (“micro-” refers to small amounts of albumin, not the size of albumin). Persistent microalbuminuria suggests the presence of either an underlying disease process causing early renal damage or lower urinary tract disease (LUTD).  The canine and feline E.R.D.-HealthScreen® Urine Tests are rapid immunoassays that detect low levels (>1.0 mg/dL) of albumin  in canine and feline urine, respectively. The tests are specific, sensitive and simple to use. They are intended to be used to determine whether more comprehensive evaluation for early renal damage is indicated. Detection of microalbuminuria during a routine health examination provides veterinarians with a new tool to discover many common canine diseases that are subclinical."  Veterinarians have been taught that proteinuria is only significant once it becomes severe (i.e., Urine Protein:Creatinine [UPC] ratio >1.0). New information indicates that even a small amount of albumin in the urine (i.e., microalbuminuria) is abnormal and can be indicative of nephron damage.

Benefits:Detects albumin at a sensitivity of up to 30 times higher than conventional dipsticks.
Alterts you to the presence of kidney damage that could be caused by many common inflammatory, infectious, metabolic and neoplastic diseases.   Excellent monitoring tool that indicates the severity of disease, treatment success and progression of kidney damage.
Features:Quick results in less than 5 minutes, allowing additional blood/urine sampling if needed while the patient is still present.   Extremely accurate - no false results.   Semi-quantitative. Shows negative, low, medium, high and very high positive test results.
