CHANGE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR STRAY DOGS

March 19, 2008
talalogoa

POLICE will no longer accept stray dogs at local police stations from April 6, 2008.

As part of the Police Reform programme some administrative processes are being given to other public bodies with the intention of freeing up police officers to concentrate on policing. In light of this the responsibility for stray dogs passes to local authorities.

Police will retain responsibility for dealing with dangerous dogs, dogs causing a danger to the public and dogs worrying livestock. The police will accept dogs which are classed as dangerous, which include:

• Pitbull
• Fila Brazileiro
• Dogo Argentino
• Japanese Tosa.

These dogs can be handed in at the following police stations:

• Watford
• Hemel Hempstead
• Hatfield
• Stevenage
• Bishop’s Stortford
• Hoddesdon

Local authorities will be advertising contact numbers and collection points for stray dogs and details will also be on their web sites.

Members of the public should be aware that if they take a stray dog into their possession it remains their responsibility until they pass it on to the relevant body.
